A significant traffic jam is currently affecting the Duarte Highway in both directions between Santo Domingo and Cibao due to the dismantling of the pedestrian bridge at kilometer 9. These construction works are expected to continue until early Monday morning. In the east-west direction on John F. Kennedy Avenue, traffic congestion has reached over a kilometer, leading vehicles to divert through Los Próceres Avenue.
The Ministry of Public Works initiated the dismantling works of the infrastructure as scheduled, starting after 7:00 pm. The project is set to be completed by 5:00 am on Monday, involving the closure of express lanes and marginal roads on the Duarte Highway in both directions. To alleviate traffic, the ministry has provided alternative routes for drivers, including Los Beisbolistas for those heading from Cibao to Santo Domingo, Santo Domingo Bypass, and 27 de Febrero Extension.
The Ministry of Public Works recently inaugurated the new pedestrian bridge at kilometer nine on the Duarte Highway, which has been open to the public since Friday night. This state-of-the-art structure includes two elevators, lights, security cameras, and various innovative features, making it the most modern pedestrian bridge in the country.
Supported by two concrete towers, one to the north and one to the south, with a height of 28 meters, the bridge is built on 15 buried piles reaching a depth of 24 meters and a 1.50-meter-thick foundation. Designed for inclusivity, the bridge features two panoramic elevators, ramps with non-slip flooring, and a special transparent roof to shield pedestrians from rain.
