The president of the Disciplinary Tribunal of the Dominican College of Journalists (CDP), Yudelki Guerrero, congratulated all Dominican journalists on National Journalist Day, April 5, while also acknowledging the challenges they face. Guerrero emphasized the vital role of journalists in keeping society informed, strengthening democracy, promoting press freedom, and contributing to societal development. She expressed appreciation for the passion, sacrifice, commitment, and risks that journalists take daily to seek the truth with ethical standards.
Among the challenges faced by Dominican journalists are low salaries, poor working conditions, and technological challenges such as the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI). Guerrero urged journalists to stand firm in seeking the truth and to be the voice of those who are unheard. She noted that in the age of social media, journalists have an obligation to keep up with new technologies to combat misinformation effectively.
Guerrero highlighted the threat to ethical journalism posed by unqualified individuals who enter the profession without proper education and fail to conduct the necessary investigative processes for in-depth analysis. She called on media employers to appreciate the work of journalists and improve their salaries to ensure dignified compensation.
Looking ahead, Guerrero and her team announced plans to conduct a workshop on journalistic ethics in the coming months with the support of public and private institutions.
«Journalists must unite to achieve our goals, including fair wages,» added the president of the CDP Disciplinary Tribunal.
