In a stunning development, the Public Ministry has requested the imposition of one year of pretrial detention as a coercive measure against prosecutor Aurelio Valdez Alcántara, who is accused of soliciting and receiving $10,000 from an individual under investigation. The arrest of the accused occurred during a controlled delivery authorized by a court last Friday, as reported by authorities.
The request was filed by prosecutor Andrés Mena before Judge Ysis Muñiz Almonte of the Special Instruction Chamber of the National District Court of Appeals. The case file consists of approximately 50 pages. Investigations reveal that Valdez Alcántara initially demanded $200,000 from the individual, which he later reduced to $150,000. Additionally, he allegedly expressed interest in receiving a Rolex watch and a Mercedes Benz vehicle, models 350 or 450.
Due to the accused’s jurisdictional privilege, Attorney General Yeni Berenice Reynoso requested the appointment of a special judge before the President of the National District Court of Appeals, Julio César E. Canó Alfau. In response, Muñiz Almonte was designated as the judge for the special instruction.
The prosecuting body also requested the scheduling of a hearing to determine the coercive measure. The investigation is being overseen directly by the Attorney General, who emphasized a zero-tolerance policy towards corruption within the institution.
«We will never tolerate acts of corruption, regardless of who commits them,» stated Yeni Berenice Reynoso, characterizing the case as severe and emphasizing the prosecutors’ responsibility in pursuing crimes. The official assured that the Public Ministry will seek to ensure the full force of the law is applied in this case.
