Despite a rise in clientele, both paying and subsidized, the three electricity distribution companies (EDE) in the Dominican Republic saw no improvement in revenue from supplied energy. The public companies closed January 2026 with 2,956,966 billed customers and 553,694 receiving the state subsidy, marking a 0.1% and 1.6% growth, respectively, from the previous year.
However, this surge in customers did not translate to higher revenue for the EDE, as reported by the Performance Report of State Electricity Companies from the Ministry of Energy and Mines (MEM). In January 2026, the EDE purchased energy worth $248.3 million, an 11% increase from the previous year’s $223.7 million.
Despite the increased energy purchases, the EDE only managed to bill 62%, equivalent to $153.9 million, of the energy acquired in January 2026, although they received payments totaling $154 million. This was despite gaining 11,676 new customers compared to the 3,498,984 from the previous year.
Comparing the figures to 2025, there was a setback this year. In January 2025, the public distributors bought energy worth $223.7 million, billing 70% ($158.7 million) and collecting $157.7 million. The revenue gap, the difference between purchased and billed energy, increased from $66 million in January 2025 to $94.3 million in January 2026.
The Unified Council of Distribution Companies (CUED) pledged in early March to stabilize the electricity distribution system and gradually reduce losses in 2026. However, January showed a slight increase in losses compared to December and a 1.5% rise from January 2025.
By the end of January, the three distribution companies lost an average of 38.9% of the purchased energy. Edeeste remains the worst performer with a 56.2% loss, followed by Edesur at 31.8% and Edenorte at 25.9%.
