Carreteo on Santiago Starts on Duarte Highway

The carreteo in the northern region began on Easter Sunday afternoon on the Duarte highway, specifically at the entrance of the Cibao International Airport, as part of the national «Safe Return» operation coordinated by the General Directorate of Traffic Safety and Land Transport (Digesett).

The regional director of the institution in Santiago, Colonel Leubiris Anderson Urbáez Mancebo, reported that the vehicular displacement started at 2:13 in the afternoon, within the established schedule by the authorities, with the aim of ensuring an orderly return and preventing traffic accidents.

«We are going to start the so-called carreteo as usual at two in the afternoon with the authorities of the National Police, the Comipol unit (Military and Police Commission), and the other participants in this type of activity,» he said.

He added that the operation includes staggered departures to improve traffic flow.

«The carreteos are carried out, one at two in the afternoon, and the next one towards four in the afternoon. It starts here at the airport and then is handed over to other teams in the Villa González area,» Urbáez Mancebo said.

He explained that the speed will be controlled during the journey. «The estimated time and speed we will maintain is between 60 and 80 kilometers per hour, so that people do not feel rushed and avoid traffic accidents,» he said.

He also pointed out that preventive measures have been reinforced. «We have taken all the corresponding preventive measures. Precautionary detentions are being carried out for those who do not wear protective helmets to prevent accidents, injuries, and road deaths,» he stated.

Positive Balance of Few Incidents in Santiago

On the other hand, the Governor of Santiago, Rosa Santos, in her capacity as President of the Prevention, Mitigation, and Response Committee (PMR), highlighted that during the holiday, no serious incidents have been reported.

«So far, we have not had any incidents or serious accidents to regret related to Easter,» she said.

The official also called for prudence on the return. «We are here for the carreteo, which is one of our last actions to help people arrive home safe and sound. We ask God that everything continues to go well and that people continue to act responsibly,» she expressed.

She indicated that the rains have influenced the population’s behavior.

She added that the balance has been favorable. «We can say that in Santiago, the accidents and incidents that have occurred during Easter have been minimal,» she concluded.

According to Digesett, the carreteo is carried out simultaneously in the northern, eastern, and southern regions of the country, in strategic sections with high traffic flow, as part of the actions to ensure a safe return during the 2026 Easter week.

The institution urged drivers to respect traffic rules, avoid speeding and reckless maneuvers, reminding that road safety is a shared responsibility.
